JUPITER, Fla. • The Cardinals cut their number of players in camp from 65 to 55 Saturday by optioning five players to Class AAA Memphis and sending five non-roster players to the minor-league complex.
Among the optioned players was shortstop Edmundo Sosa, who hit .294 in 17 at-bats this spring with three doubles and a triple and a .957 OPS. The others optioned were outfielder Adolis Garcia (.048) and pitchers Ryan Helsley, Giovanny Gallegos and Genesis Cabrera, a lefthander who allowed eight runs in three spring innings, including a three-run homer in Saturday’s 9-3 exhibition loss to Houston.
