Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty, two of the Cardinals who had contributed to Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson being 0-8 against the Cardinals, struck again in the first inning Tuesday night as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead.
Carpenter opened with a double, his ninth hit in 19 at-bats against Nelson. It also extended his hitting streak to seven games since he had been reinstalled as the leadoff hitter and he’s had six extra-base hits in those games.
After Tommy Pham grounded out, Piscotty, seven for 15 against Nelson, poked a single to right. Carpenter held at third on the play but scored on a forceout grounder by Jose Martinez as the Brewers middle infielders failed to turn what should have been a double play.
