The Cardinals have had some sloppy games in the field at home and yet rarely had to play on a field as sloppy as Sunday’s. It took the grounds crew almost as much time to keep the field playable as it took the Cardinals’ bullpen to fish the final six outs out of its own swamp.
A grand slam gave the Cardinals a six-run lead in the sixth and yet Stephen Piscotty’s blast wasn’t enough by the end of the game to provide the winning run.
Through rain and muck, bullpen fissures and the gloom of the ninth, the Cardinals found a way through 6 hours, 17 minutes of play and weather-related delays to deliver a 9-8 victory against Milwaukee at Busch Stadium.
