Hicks, topping out at 102.7 mph, was particularly impressive, getting five groundball outs while allowing a harmless single in 1 2/3 innings. There was no need for 105 this time and Matheny said he liked not only what he saw from the sinker but that Hicks, who got the last two outs of the seventh with just three pitches, was strong enough to handle another inning in the eighth. This hasn’t always been the case this season.
