Cards avoid being no hit, but can't dodge loss, fall 4-1 to Cubs

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny did some rearranging on his lineup in an effort to perk up a batting order that has not been very prolific of late, and it did not work.

Up against Cubs righthander Kyle Hendricks, possibly the best pitcher in the National League at the moment, no hit the Cardinals through eight innings before Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a home run to right field on an 0-2 changeup to lead off the ninth. The Cardinals otherwise went down meekly, losing 4-1 at Busch Stadium. In the grander scheme of things, the Cardinals missed a chance to move back into the second wild-card spot as the Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 8-1.
