ST. LOUIS • The Cardinals, having already fortified their bullpen with a former closer earlier this month, added another former closer in Jonathan Broxton a few hours before Friday's trade deadline.
The Cardinals sent rookie-level outfielder Malik Collymore to Milwaukee for Broxton, who has served in a setup role for the Brewers this season. The 31-year-old righthander has more than 100 career saves, though he's had a difficult season with a 5.89 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals are adding depth to an overworked bullpen with Broxton not preparing to move one of the young relievers in another deal, according to an official.
