The Cardinals completed the second best August in their history Friday night at 22-6 (.786) behind only the World Series champion 1944 team, which was 23-4 (.853).
The month began with lefthanded rookie Austin Gomber gaining his first major-league victory in relief by beating Colorado. It ended with Gomber gaining his fifth big-league victory, chiseled with his bat, his arm, his guile and some late lightning as the Cardinals whacked the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 at Busch Stadium.
