The vintage 1956 uniforms the Cardinals sported Saturday night weren’t very popular then and probably won’t be worn anymore after Saturday night.
In 1956, fans bellowed in protest when general manager Frank Lane removed the traditional birds-on-the-bat for a script “Cardinals.” The birds-on-the-bat returned the next year.
The Cardinals finished only 76-78 for that 1956 season, winding up 17 games behind the National League champion Brooklyn Dodgers, who beat them 16 times in 22 games. The Dodgers aren’t in Brooklyn anymore but they sported a “B” on their hats as they whipped the locals 7-2 before a sellout house of 45,477 at Busch Stadium.
