Wieters, 32, spent the previous two seasons with Washington, and in 76 games with the Nationals hit .238/.330/.374 with eight home runs and a .704 OPS in 271 at-bats. A switch-hitter and two-time Gold Glove winner before injuries interrupted his run as one of the better catchers in the American League, Wieters will get a look as a seasoned backup behind Yadier Molina.
In his career, Wieters has hit .251/.315/.410, and as a young star for Baltimore the fifth-overall pick in the 2007 draft had three consecutive years with at least 20 home runs. His 135 home runs as a catcher since 2009 rank fourth-most at the position, just ahead of Molina's 117 since that season.
