MILWAUKEE • The Cardinals had a runner at first, at second and at third in the first three innings Sunday. But it did them little good. The nine outs they made in those innings _ in whIch they didn’t score _ were all strikeouts by Milwaukee righthander Corbin Burnes, who was making his first major league start.
Coupled with the end of Saturday’s game, the Cardinals made 13 consecutive outs via strikeout. Manager Mike Shildt had said before the game that the team which makes the most productive outs is the team that usually wins.
The Cardinals, with no productive outs, were trailing 1-0, by virtue of Christian Yelich’s first-inning home run, his fourth homer in the first four games of the season.
