SAN DIEGO • It sure did seem this week like the Cardinals added an alternative for late-inning duties and yet here they were this evening in San Diego, late in a close game, and then going to Seung Hwan Oh, the closer who has struggled with his off-speed pitch most of the season.
What happened next has two facets.
First, it put the Padres further ahead.
Second, it matters a bit less because the Cardinals have yet to a score a run and doing so is required if they intend to win the game.
