PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. • Mike Matheny, who wished he had managed the second inning of Friday’s Cardinals-New York Mets exhibition like it was a regular-season game, pulled out at least most of the stops in the ninth inning as the Cardinals rallied for three runs, then gave one back, in a 5-5 tie with the New York Mets.
Matheny, who eschewed an intentional walk possibility in the second inning when Matt Reynolds, the No. 8 hitter, singled in a run, employed three pinch hitters in the ninth inning.
Brayan Pena hit a hard ground ball.
