Mayers will be added to the 40-man roster Sunday before his promotion. The righthander had been in the opening day bullpen before an injury cost him the first half of the season and ultimately led the team to risk him through waivers. This past month, the power righthander has gone six-for-six in save opportunities for Triple-A Memphis with 15 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings pitched. Shildt’s familiarity and Mayers’ fastball gave him an edge on other possible promotions.
Notably absent from the promotions are starter Jake Woodford and slugger Adolis Garcia. The team had previously indicated to The Post-Dispatch that top prospect Dylan Carlson would not be a September callup.
