CHICAGO — With a tie game to hold and then a late lead to close Monday night at Wrigley Field, the Cardinals showed their relief recipe for close games they really only talked about during spring, not yet had a chance to see all that often.
Genesis Cabrera, Jordan Hicks, and Ryan Helsley – in that order – combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings, and all three relievers pitched more than three outs. Helsley got four outs to secure his fourth save.
They gave a glimpse of what the Cardinals once thought was possible.
“It would be pretty damn good,” manager Oliver Marmol said.
