An RBI single by Jhonny Peralta with two outs in the ninth tied the game at 1-1 and sent the Cardinals and the Royals to extra innings.
Royals reliever Wade Davis had gotten saves in 18 of his first 19 chances this season but couldn't navigate the ninth. He started by walking Kolten Wong, who was replaced on the bases by Greg Garcia when Garcia grounded into a force. Pinch hitter Jedd Gyorko singled up the middle but Garcia had a bad read on the ball and got only to second.
Matt Carpenter struck out on a checked swing to bring up Peralta, who was 1 for 4.
