Cardinals renew Flaherty and Hicks contracts

JUPITER, Fla. • After renewing outfielder Tommy Pham’s contract at $570,000 last year when the two sides couldn’t agree on a one-year deal, the Cardinals renewed the contracts of righthanded pitchers Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks Saturday. The club also announced the signing of 18 other non-arbitration-eligible players to one-year deals.

Flaherty, 23, and Hicks, 21, both had standout rookie seasons, with Flaherty posting an 8-9 record with a 3.34 earned run average and striking out 10.85 batters per nine innings.

Hicks, who had six saves and 70 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings, threw 659 pitches clocked at 100 miles an hour or more.
