Prior to Wednesday night's game against the Dodgers, the Cardinals released relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton and called up pitcher John Gant from Triple-A Memphis, GM John Mozeliak announced.
Broxton is now a free agent and may sign with any team for a pro-rated minimum salary. The right-hander inked a two-year, $7.5 million contract prior to the 2016 season after he was acquired via trade from the Brewers in 2015.
Should Broxton sign elsewhere, the Cardinals will be responsible for the remainder of his $3.75 million salary in 2017, minus the pro-rated minimum.
"We talk about performance and unfortunately it just wasn't working," Mozeliak said.
