JUPITER, Fla. • The Cardinals decision to remove Chasen Shreve from the 40-man roster pulled back the curtain on the internal discussions about more than just who would be in the opening day bullpen.
The Cardinals announced Friday morning that they had designated Shreve for assignment, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for backup catcher Matt Wieters. Shreve will be available to the other 29 teams in the coming days, and if he is not selected the Cardinals can outright him to Class AAA Memphis, where he will serve as insurance from the left side.
