ANAHEIM, Calif. • Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, dogged by a respiratory infection and flu-like symptoms for more than a week, regained weight and health over the weekend, and on Wednesday will test his recovery from the bullpen mound. The Cardinals pushed back Martinez’s announced start, buying him two more days of rest and a chance Wednesday to throw a bullpen session.
Adam Wainwright will start Thursday and Michael Wacha on Friday, both on the standard four days of rest, to allow Martinez the extra days to recover.
Martinez had an exam taken of his chest to determine if the infection was more severe than initially diagnosed, and at the same time he had an MRI taken of his right arm.
