Class AAA pitcher Marco Gonzales will have Tommy John Surgery and miss the rest of the season, general manager John Mozeliak announced Wednesday before the Cardinals played the Brewers at Busch Stadium.
Mozeliak said the 24-year-old lefty is scheduled for the surgery on Friday. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure.
"I did speak with him," Mozeliak said of Gonzales. "He's certainly disappointed. As a pitcher, he knows there is risk when you throw, and he feels he will come back better and stronger than prior to the injury."
Mozeliak said Gonzales' injury elevates the importance of Class AAA pitchers Deck McGuire and Jeremy Hefner.
