WASHINGTON • As the Cardinals near next month’s draft rich with picks and possibilities, it appears that Major League Baseball will be unable to exact a punishment for last summer’s hacking scandal in time to put draft limitations on the club this June.
The sentencing hearing for former Cardinals executive Chris Correa has been delayed several times, and as a result the commissioner’s office has not resolved its investigation into Correa’s admission that he illegally entered the Houston Astros’ database. The Cardinals have been braced for punishment of some kind, but the timing has been unclear.
