Cardinals notes: Pena, Pham could miss a month

PITTSBURGH • After meeting with doctors back in St. Louis, Cardinals catcher Brayan Pena and outfielder Tommy Pham could both require a month of recovery before returning from injuries sustained in the past week.

Pena had surgery Tuesday in St. Louis to remove a loose particle in his left knee, and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said no other damage was discovered within the joint. The Cardinals’ backup catcher has been placed on a rehab program that is expected to take him about a month to complete, though Matheny left open the possibility that “it could be sooner” depending on Pena’s healing.
