CHICAGO — Before he could see how the road jersey with the blank back that he wore during “Summer Camp” had been altered with his name and the number he’d carry into his major-league debut, Dylan Carlson had an idea of the single digit the Cardinals picked for him.
He spied it first on his new bag tags.
“That kind of gave it away,” the rookie said.
For an organization that is running out of single-digits, the Cardinals outfitted Carlson, their top prospect, with No. 3. It’s the same number one of his favorite players, Carlos Beltran, wore as a Cardinal, and it also served as a nod to the afternoon the Cardinals had in Chicago.
