Before righthander Michael Wacha took the mound for Class AA Springfield on Tuesday night in a minor league rehab start, his third this month, against Arkansas, Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch didn’t discount the possibility that Wacha might need one more before he rejoined the Cardinals’ rotation.
Off what happened in Springfield, there might be need for that one more, or even for Wacha to slow his comeback pace. Girsch had hoped that Wacha, recovering from a strained left oblique muscle suffered in June, could get to 65 pitches. He reached just 52 in 2 1/3 innings, the final of those a three-run homer by Arkansas’ Kyle Lewis, and there might be concern still about his health.
