FORT MYERS, Fla. — With innings growing scarcer for all of the contenders to be the fifth starter in the Cardinals’ rotation, Alex Reyes saw his assignment shift Monday to a shorter outing.
Less innings for him does not mean less important innings.
After Kwang Hyun Kim and Daniel Ponce de Leon, two pitchers vying for one opening, combined for eight shutout innings against Minnesota’s varsity “Bomba Squad” lineup, Reyes got the call for the save in a 3-0 victory. The righthander struck out two, touched 97 mph with his fastball and completed the shutout around two hits allowed.
