CHICAGO — The Cardinals continued their combing through handy options available to retool their pitching staff and sent a rookie back to Class AAA for a start during the All-Star break. But the most telling move of all Friday was subtler, making the others possible.
To find a spot on the 40-man roster for Luis Garcia so he could take Johan Oviedo’s spot on the active roster, the Cardinals moved starter Carlos Martinez to the 60-day injured list.
He is the fourth member of the rotation to go on the extended injured list, and it is possible that the righthander will miss the remainder of the season because of a torn ligament in his right thumb.
