John Brebbia, the last Cardinals reliever to pitch three scoreless innings, found himself optioned to Memphis after that performance, which netted him an official save on Wednesday night.
His replacement, John Gant, matched Brebbia and then some on Thursday, retiring all nine men he faced to gain credit for the victory in a 4-3 win in 13 innings over the Mets. And he appeared headed for Pittsburgh, not Memphis, after the game although nobody knows for how long.
“We’ll see,” said Gant, as he transferred clothing from one bag to another for the trip.
There was no question where the 25-year-old righthander stood Thursday.
