The Cardinals put three men on base after Michael Wacha's 1-2-3 inning, but a Jeremy Hazelbaker strikeout sent the Redbirds into the second without a run.
Hazelbaker didn't love the strike zone he encountered. So much so that he watched three straight strikes -- two 95 mph-plus Gerrit Cole fastballs, followed by an 89 mph slider -- without swinging the bat.
Stephen Piscotty singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch that both struck and Matt Holliday and sent Holliday to first base. Yadier Molina then walked.
Molina extended a nice gesture to former Cardinal David Freese in the second.
