Cardinals insider: Draft will signal Redbirds' direction

As he hit, hit, hit his way into the spotlight and out of a state rarely known for producing first-round talent, Nick Plummer carried a scouting report that praised his compact swing, his athleticism, and most of all his discipline around the strike zone. He’d seek what he called recently “a hitter’s pitch,” and if he didn’t see it, he’d accept a walk, thank you. Elite production was worth the wait.

Scouts praised his patience.

They had no idea.

The Cardinals selected Plummer out of a Michigan high school with the 23rd overall pick in the 2015 draft and signaled a subtle shift for the team in the draft.
