PHOENIX • While their spending is still limited by sanctions imposed by Major League Baseball, the Cardinals interest in Cuban talent remains constant.
On the first day of the 2018-19 international signing period, the Cardinals are finalizing an agreement with 17-year-old third baseman Malcolm Nunez, a one-time star of Cuba's young national team. After overspending during the 2016-17 signing period, the Cardinals are unable to offer a single player more than $300,000. It's expected that Nunez will command that much (update: he did, a source confirms).
Sources described an agreement and it could be announced Monday, the first day that teams can finalize contracts with eligible players.
