SCOUTING REPORT The Cubs’ 29-12 start before Sunday night’s game in San Francisco was their best since 1918, when they opened 30-12. Since July 29 of last year, they were 74-30, a full 10 games ahead of the Texas Rangers for the best record in the majors. This will be the Cubs’ second visit to St. Louis in the first seven weeks of the season, with only one more remaining on Sept. 12-14, which also is not a weekend. The Cardinals don’t make the first of their three visits to Chicago until June 20-22.
Former Cardinal Jason Heyward is a doubtful participant in the series after making a diving catch and banging into the right-field wall in San Francisco on Friday, bruising his right rib-cage area in the process.
