NEW YORK • As little success as the Cardinals have had year after year after year against the throws All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman can make, they calculated Friday they would have even less of a chance against just one from New York Yankees’ shortstop Ronald Torreyes.
With a runner on first, Jose Martinez delivered the unthinkable — an extra-base hit off Chapman — and the Cardinals opted not to press for the unlikely. Instead of sending Randal Grichuk around third as the potential tying run in the ninth and testing Torreyes’ accuracy, the Cardinals held him.
