After the Brewers threatened but could not score in the first, the Cardinals jumped on top when Matt Carpenter led off with a check-swing infield single and Aledmys Diaz, playing in his first game since fouling a ball of his face Monday night in Kansas City, lined a double into the left-field corner. Carpenter came around to score the first run, but Diaz was caught in a rundown and eventually tagged out.
In the top of the first, Jonathan Villar led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a one-out groundout.
