Cardinals add pitching depth

With Jeremy Hefner (shoulder) joining Marco Gonzales (elbow) and Tim Cooney (shoulder) on the disabled list from the Class AAA Memphis rotation, the Cardinals had to reach outside the organization to add some pitching depth to their highest affiliate.

The Cardinals signed veteran starter Jerome Williams to a minor-league contract Friday, and he’ll join the Triple-A Redbirds rotation.

Last with Philadelphia in the majors, Williams went 4-12 with a 5.80 ERA in 2015. One of his early catchers in the majors with the San Francisco Giants was Mike Matheny, and he has 149 starts and more than 1,000 innings pitched in the majors.
