LAS VEGAS • On the first day of the winter meetings, the Cardinals continued to have internal debates on whether the major-league bench needed a lefthanded-hitting infielder or a left-handed hitting outfield.
In a swap of infielders Tuesday afternoon, the Cardinals sent slugger Patrick Wisdom to the Texas Rangers for Drew Robinson, a lefthanded hitter who can play center field and also has infield experience. Robinson, 26, is a Las Vegas native who played 47 games in the majors this past summer and has 95 games with the Rangers in the past two seasons.
Robinson started a majority of his games in center, but he also appeared at shortstop, second base, third, and he can play the corner outfield spots.
