Cardinals' 2-1 win over Washington is fundamental

JUPITER, Fla. • The Cardinals relied heavily on fundamental pitching and defense and a theft of home on the back end of a double steal to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 in exhibition baseball Monday, snapping a four-game winless streak.

The runnin’ Redbirds, who have swiped 13 bases in 11 spring games, pulled off their double steal for their first run in a two-run fifth.

Jose Martinez doubled for his second hit, held third as Jedd Gyorko grounded out and went to third on Luke Voit’s infield tapper.

Voit, not known for his speed, took off from first and catcher Miguel Montero, not known for his arm, bounced a throw to second.
