ST. LOUS -- With run support lacking on a groggy early Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium, Carlos Martinez took matters into his own hands.
The Cardinals ace broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with his first career home run, a 407-foot shot to left-center off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Giolito had matched Martinez for much of the afternoon, allowing only a single through 5 2/3 innings before the home run. Martinez entered play a career .187 hitter in 225 career plate appearances, with six doubles accounting for his only extra-base hits.
On the mound, Martinez continued his early-season dominance.
