ST. LOUIS • A day after St. Louis Cardinals management turned off the metal detectors at Busch Stadium to accommodate a record-breaking crowd, the team sought to balance new league security rules with the patience of its fans.

The Cardinals vice president for stadium operations, Joe Abernathy, said Tuesday team officials decided to shut off the security system about 40 minutes before the first pitch of Monday’s home opener.
