CHICAGO • What the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright built through nearly eight innings of work, it took the bullpen less than three batters to ruin.
Wainwright took a 2-0 lead into the eighth inning and he got two outs from the Cubs, but when the tying run got to first base manager Mike Matheny decided to go to the bullpen. What followed was a mess of hits and plays that led the Cubs to a 3-2 victory Saturday at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs scored all three runs in the eighth.
Two of them came after Wainwright had departed.
