Broxton's struggles outweighed his popularity, leadership

The makeover of the Cardinals’ roster continued Wednesday evening when struggling veteran reliever Jonathan Broxton was released and righthander John Gant, who was likely to make the club until he suffered a groin injury near the end of spring training, was brought up to offer help in long relief.

Broxton, 32, was 0-1 with a 6.89 earned-run average in 20 appearances, including giving up four hits and two runs in one inning Tuesday night in a 9-4 loss to Los Angeles. He is on the second year of a two-year contract, which was paying him $4 million this year.
