Brock sidelined by bad back

Hall of Famer Lou Brock, who had taken part in last year’s opening day ceremonies just months after having his leg amputated, was not on hand Sunday, owing to back issues he has had. Cardinals Hall of Famer Chris Carpenter was absent from the pre-game procession for family reasons.

Among the Hall of Famers who was on hand was 93-year-old Red Schoendienst. Other National Baseball Hall of Famers who were honored in the pre-game celebration were Cardinals managers Tony La Russa, Whitey Herzog and Joe Torre, ace righthander Bob Gibson, reliever Bruce Sutter and shortstop Ozzie Smith.

Former Cardinals lefthander John Tudor threw the ceremonial first pitch to former catcher/telecaster Tim McCarver.
