LAS VEGAS • Two years and a significant Achilles tendon injury removed from his heyday as a closer, free-agent reliever Zach Britton can still position himself in this winter's market to earn closer dollars.
It's all due to the limited availability of lefties with high-leverage experience, as the Cardinals are well aware. They used this week's winter meetings to learn more about Britton's asking price.
Britton led the league with 47 saves in 2016 for Baltimore, and that was the third of his consecutive seasons with at least 35 saves. He’s been utilized outside of the ninth inning in the past two seasons and his agent said Britton would be open to that lockdown lefty role again.
