MILWAUKEE • The Cardinals had opened up a 3-0 lead, but that wasn't why the stadium went silent in the third inning.
Tommy Pham connected for a low line drive that hit pitcher Jimmy Nelson in the head. Nelson dropped to the mound and everybody froze. Matt Carpenter didn't know whether to advance from third base, staring instead at Nelson as he lay motionless on the mound.
The ball caromed far enough for Pham to stop and start his way to second base for a double.
He got to second, put his head in his hands and squatted there.
