MILWAUKEE • Both starting pitchers Thursday night had had their way with the opponent last year. Milwaukee’s Zach Davies had a 1-0 record and 1.66 earned run average against the Cardinals in three starts while the Cardinals’ Carlos Martinez was 3-0, 1.38 against Milwaukee.
But, after Davies had survived a single by Aledmys Diaz, a stolen base and a wild pitch by getting strikeouts of Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty in the Cardinals' first, the Brewers scored almost as many runs off Martinez in their half as they had all last season.
Jonathan Villar singled under third baseman Jedd Gyorko and went to second when first baseman Carpenter couldn’t handle a Martinez pickoff throw.
