NEW YORK • One pitch after a fan may have helped Adam Wainwright keep Aaron Judge's blast in the ballpark, there was nothing anyone could do to keep Greg Bird's blast from reaching the bleachers.
Bird, mired in a massive slump to start the season, tagged a two-run homer off Adam Wainwright in the second inning, and that vaulted the host Yankees to a 3-1 lead. Bird entered the game one-for-26 to start the season. He has two hits in his first two at-bats against the Cardinals' righthander.
The batter before Bird, Judge, and drilled a ball to the wall in right-center field.
