JUPITER, Fla. — The latest impressive spring training play made by prized Cardinals prospect Masyn Winn arrived one moment too late.
Playing second base instead of his usual shortstop, the 20-year-old, 2020 second-round draft pick sprinted to his left and slid from the Roger Dean Stadium dirt into the shallow outfield grass, where he intersected a grounder hit by Nicaragua’s Norlando Valle in the fifth inning of Thursday’s World Baseball Classic exhibition win. Winn came up cocked to fire. But then, he hesitated. It became the difference between an incredible inning-ending out and an infield hit.
“I should have made that play,” Winn said after the win.
