As the temperature was dropping at Busch Stadium and the dark clouds continued to roll toward downtown, the Cardinals were cooling off and looking a little too gray.
Dylan Carlson had cracked a leadoff homer. Jon Lester had held the Royals scoreless through three frames. The Cardinals had seemed as if they were trending toward a rare series sweep.
Lester sandwiched a hit batter between three consecutive singles in the Royals’ two-run fourth. In a 2-0 count with the bases loaded in the bottom half of that inning, Andrew Knizner hit into a double play. When left fielder Tyler O’Neill made a great throw to the plate, Knizner missed the ball.
