Shildt texted Carpenter about the plan Friday night, after Carpenter had gone hitless against Dodgers starter Walker Buehler and struck out three times, including once as the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. The noon start time meant that Shildt could get Carpenter a break from the early report time and more than a full day's break until Sunday night's game against the Dodgers on ESPN.
"Good day for him to get a blow," Shildt said. "When the rotation was set for this series, looking at it five days ago, pretty much a day that we felt could be a good one for Carp.
