The Pirates continued to hit the ball long and hard off Carlos Martinez, extending their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning on Tuesday night.
Pedro Alvarez hit a home run to center field on the first pitch he saw from Martinez in the fourth inning. The homer, the 15th this season for Alvarez, was estimated at 446 feet.
In four innings, the Pirates have five hits off Martinez: a home run, a triple that just missed being a home run by an inch or so, two doubles and a single.
The Cardinals have left five runners on base through three innings.
