NEW YORK • It took a few dozen pitches and a run, but that wildness that Carlos Martinez has experienced all afternoon has at least started to work for his benefit.
Martinez opened the fifth inning with a strikeout.
It was his 11th strikeout already of the game, and in three at-bats Yankees designated hitter Chris Carpenter has struck out three times. That includes two strikeouts in the first and second inning, during which Martinez walked six of his teammates. Leadoff hitter Brett Gardner and No. 2 hitter Aaron Hicks each walked twice in their first two plate appearances.
